The Relativeness and Function of Historical Interpretation of Music – the Problem Explicated through a Historical analysis of the Fundamenta textbook from Novo mesto

Abstract

The article presents the contents of the theoretical and practical part of the Fundamenta textbook, preserved in the Francisian Monastery in Novo mesto, as well as problems of its historical interpretation here and now. Apart from the problem of relativeness that accompanies the possibility of such an interpretation “through” at least three quite different historiographical “systems” (for the time being, scholarly “legitimate” approaches), the just-mentioned problems contain also questions regarding certain broader cultural and ideological points of view concerning the functionality, i. e. scholarly research in the field of music history, viewpoints that actually realize such research socially or rather “objectify” it also on the level of a symbolic transfer of an – implicit – politico – economic point of view, inevitably present when choosing one’s position within the currently accepted practice of (musical) historiography, and, at the same time, while asserting one’s viewpoints in the functionally “expert field” of such practice.

Radovan ŠKRJANC, doktor muzikoloških znanosti in akademski glasbenik – pianist, zaposlen kot klavirski pedagog na Glasbeni šoli Ljubljana Vič Rudnik in raziskovalec na Muzikološkem inštitutu ZRC SAZU. Njegovo raziskovalno delo se osredotoča na zgodovino cerkvene in klavirske glasbe na Slovenskem v obdobju 18. in zgodnjega 19. stoletja.
